Today is International Krispy Kreme Day, marking the 72nd birthday of that wanton, delectable mix of sugar and grease concocted by one Vernon Carver Rudolph in 1937. The company marked the milestone by paying a $40,000 fine for hiring illegal immigrants at its Cincinnati doughnut factory, one of the first victims of a policy shift aimed at punishing employers, not workers, for immigration violations.
